Rest in Him

As a child my mother played a song by Douglas Miller called “My Soul Has Been Anchored in the Lord”. It has stuck with me to my adult years and one that comes to mind as I meditate on Psalm 62:1 - In God alone my soul finds rest; my salvation comes from Him.

It made me think of the times my soul experienced unrest – mind, will and emotions all over the place, unstable, unhappy and lacking peace. From a biblical context, and according to the Topical Bible, unrest refers to a state of turmoil, discontentment or lack of peace.

Our souls bear the weight of what we choose to carry – whether it be consequences of wrong turns and decisions we’ve made or the daily challenges that come with living life.

The key word is “choose”. We choose what we meditate on and the thoughts that compass our minds. We also choose how we express the emotions that weigh on our hearts. Most importantly, we choose our own will.

I’m a huge proponent of the concept of no-grey areas. The result of life is either black or white. Consider this: Black represents the will of our flesh and the world. White represents the will of God our Creator, Lord, God and King.

When we choose God’s righteousness and His love, we find life, prosperity and honor. (Proverbs 21:21 NIV). We can all imagine and admit what we find when we choose to gratify our flesh – darkness/death, lack and dishonor.

And there are unfortunate times when life deals us a difficult hand even when we choose God’s way.

But as the scripture states, in God alone my soul finds rest. David making this declarative statement leads me to believe his soul experienced unrest at some point or quite possibly at the time he wrote this psalm. Either he spoke it in faith, or it was tried and true. I choose to believe David knows it because he tried, just as Doulgas Miller when he sang the song, My soul is anchored in the Lord. But there are some of us who might not know it yet and today is the day. God has given us all a measure of faith (Romans 12:3). Today muster of what you have and believe God will give you the rest your soul needs. He knows exactly what you need – after all, He is your Maker (Isaiah 54:5). Nothing takes Him by surprise and there is no problem too big or too hard for Him to solve.

Rest in Him today.
